Colonel McMillan looked one last time through his optical enhancer at the Eastern Starport.
The starport was highlighted by the rising sun and still seemed to be in pretty good condition.
The insidious Eldar had taken control of it during a lightning raid 3 months ago, but they did not ransack it or destroy it.
Now, Colonel McMillan and his 82nd Mordian Iron Guard were tasked with taking it back - in useable condition if possible.
The colonel had planned a lighting raid of his own with airborne troops and stormtroopers riding in dozens of Vendetta and Valkyrie aircraft supported with by over 80 Chimera personal carriers.
The tough old colonel knew he had the numbers to overtake the Eldar base, but the Eldar were nothing if not crafty and sneaky and he worried that he might be leading his men into some kind of ambush where his men would be slaughtered by exotic xenos weaponry and cursed warp magic.
But seeing nothing out of the ordinary, the colonel gave the order to advance and the mighty armored spearhead sped forth into the outer reaches of the starport`s grounds.
Griffon heavy mortar tanks began lobbing their deadly payload into the midst of the Eldar base; their shells blasting apart the Eldar warriors into little chunks of burned meat while not seriously damaging any of the buildings or other valuable facilities in the starport.
The Eldar mobilized to defend the starport, but were quickly out-maneuvered and unable to close the gap with their human attackers due to constant multilaser and heavy bolter cover fire.
Slower moving Guardian squads and War Walkers were ripped apart by the deadly barrage of anti-personnel weaponry.
Autarch Jade suffered severe burn wounds from a plasma blast before being dragged from the battlefield with a retreat into the surrounding hills.
The Eastern Starport was soon overrun and once again in the hands of the Imperium.
Colonel McMillan sighed in relief; the battle was over relatively quickly with minimal losses.
He ordered a vox operator to open a line and contacted his old war buddy, Lord Commissar Krauser.
"Yeah, the little pansies ran away without putting up much of a fight!"
The colonel continued to yell into the vox, "You can move in your armor and troops now.
We have a new base of operations on the eastern front and we have an extra starport to help our logistics a bit."
120 kilometers to the east, Krauser sent his thanks and ordered his column of tanks to move across the last expanse before the Eastern Starport.
Thinking everything was clear, the commissar did not notice that he and his men were about to stumble into a trap…

A few hours earlier and half-a-day`s journey to the south, a far more terrible, bloody, and brutal battle had taken place.
Temptarix, Keeper of Secrets and mighty servant of Slaanesh had been manipulating the warp currents with its sorcery in order to open a large warp-gate in the Eastern Starport.
The mighty daemon lord could not suppress its anticipation any longer and decided to move in for the torment and slaughter of his "cute little Eldar play things".
However, his plan was once again subverted by an undetected interloper amongst his troops - an agent of Tzeentch.
The Changeling suspected that if Temptatrix was able to capture and torture the Eldar inhabitants of the starport, the whimsical Greater Daemon might become bored and decide to return to the Realm of Chaos.
This simply could not be allowed by the Changeling or his patron god, Tzeentch; not until everyone`s fate had completely played out.
With a little trickery and magical side-stepping, the warp-gate opened in a different place - a massive Tyranid nest in Eaden Hive!
With no power supplying the hive city and under complete darkness of night, the large warp-gate opened and spilled daemonic invaders into the ranks of the alien Tyranids.
Mass confusion followed, but butchery and bloodshed were constant everywhere.
Dozens of Bloodletters emerged from the warp into swarms of helpless Zoathropes, Termagants and Biovores.
The shock troops of Khorne took thousands of alien skulls for their Blood God only to be ripped apart by counter attacking Genestealers and Carnifexes.
A mighty Great Unclean One stepped from the warp and bellowed a hearty, unearthly laugh as it approached a trio of gargantuan Carnifexes and a titanic battle ensued.
The Hive Tyrant dubbed Leader Organism 1342 joined the fray but was cleaved in half by the Great Unclean One`s mighty sword.
The demonic leader Temptatrix also emerged alone and unsupported into a den of several wakening Carnifexes.
The Keeper of Secrets quickly retreated back into the warp-gate to avoid his demise from the Carnifexes deadly living ammunition.
Seemingly leaderless, the surviving Tyranids reacted with animal-like instinct and quickly fled back into the recesses, sewers, tunnels, and caves surrounding the hive city.
With Temptatrix temporarily not in command of this cursed demonic legion, a new towering Greater Daemon stepped from the warp to thank its faithful servant, the Changeling.
The legendary Greater Daemon of Tzeentch, Fateweaver, stared in admiration at the tens of thousands of daemons before him as they killed and devoured the few remaining Tyranids.

With this army, Fateweaver could carry out the wishes of Tzeentch without the petty whims of Slaanesh.
But unseen by even the Lord of Change, the corpse of Leader Organism 1342 began to reknit and regenerate its massive wound and life flickered back into its eyes.
Soon the Hive Tyrant stalked off to join its brood underground unnoticed…

In the mountain stronghold of the Alpha Legion, the recently-deceased Chaos Lieutenant Borsis's replacement (who used the moniker, Kruggar the Killer) was already proving to be more valuable and loyal to Judass.
Kruggar had informed the Chaos Lord that there was a large, relatively undamaged Imperial Sanctum located less than 50 kilometers south of Pahradiess Hive.
Auspex scans revealed that under that building was a hidden manufactorum and lab facility.
Judass flashed his dagger-like smile and dismissed Kruggar; this attack would be led by the Arch-Slayer himself!
Unfortunately, Judass`s thrill at potentially locating the base of the missing Adept Biad-dur was quickly dashed.
As his strikeforce surrounded the facility, they were suddenly attacked by Dorn`s loyalist dogs - the Imperial Fists!
The Alpha Legion were seemingly overwhelmed by drop pods, Rhinos, and Land Speeders in a matter of moments, but there was no way Judass would order a retreat now; not when he was so close to finding Biad-dur.
A unit of Terminators teleported down to block the entrance of the Sanctum, but Judass just marched forward intent on slaying anyone and everyone that stood in his way.
Judass carried the torn-off head of an Imperial Fist sergeant as he launched his assault.
But these Terminators were personally selected by Captain Sandros for this mission and they fought with extra bravery and ferocity.
Wounded, beaten and humiliated by the Terminator squad, Judass the Arch-Slayer was forced to retreat.
At the same time, Pauro Sandros emerged from his drop pod and led his troops into the heart of the Alpha Legion.
Loyalist and Traitor marines resumed the never-ending battle that had started 10,000 years earlier with Horus`s betrayal; chainswords whirred and shredded flesh, bolts punctured power armor and detonated chest cavities in bloody crimson sprays, and bodies smoldered and burned from plasma blasts.
No quarter was asked, expected or given and only efficient and merciless slaughter followed from both sides.
Losses were heavy and even the Alpha Legion`s daemonic allies could not turn the tide of the battle.
In the end Captain Sandros, with two blood-soaked marines in tow, emerged from the fray and entered the Sanctum.
Six floors below they found the missing Tech-Magos who agreed to go peacefully with the Space Marines back to their headquarters…

Supreme Commander Rolando des Gard smiled as he ordered the surprise attack.
He had successfully carried out his master`s will by crushing the pretender Lieutenant Borsis and his followers.
But instead of being rewarded with permission to attack Harkonian forces directly, his liege Judass the Arch-Slayer instead ordered him to stand down and wait.
Did his lord not believe Supreme Commander Rolando could defeat the legendary Lord Commissar Krauser on the field of battle?
Rolando wanted to chop off the Lord Commissar`s head with his eviscerator and present it to the Arch-Slayer to prove his loyalty and his prowess as a commander.
Now was his chance.
Krauser was leading a column of tanks into the Eastern Starport and seemed unaware of any ambush.
The PDF Commander`s smile grew even wider as he watched Harkonian tanks and personnel carrier explode in balls of orange flames.
Rolando checked the controls on his eviscerator and followed his men down the hill to join the battle.
Despite some early kills by the Harkonian tanks commanders, the more mobile Jenys-S Firstborn forces quickly surrounded the Imperial Guard and inflicted heavy casualties.
Nimble Sentinals armed with a variety of heavy weapons outmaneuvered their slower Chimera and Leman Russ opponents in the dense hilly terrain.
Lord Commissar Krauser cursed his former comrades in the Planetary Defense Forces and their traitorous attack.
The wise commissar knew he was beaten this day and ordered a retreat before the battle could turn into a massacre.
He ordered a specialist assassin/bodyguard by the name of John Doe to infiltrate behind enemy lines and assassinate Supreme Commander Rolando to hopefully slow down the PDF advance.
While fleeing on foot with his troops, Krauser was caught in the targeting sights of a Jenys-S Firstborn Leman Russ Punisher tank.
Krauser`s body was perforated by punisher cannon shells in a bloody spray.
Surviving Harkonian soldiers dragged the commissar`s corpse from the field of battle while weeping bitter tears for their fallen leader…

Several days later, Pauro Sandros entered the command station of the Eastern Starport.
Biad-dur and his Servitors followed along with a squad of Veteran Marines.
There was much to celebrate: the Tech Adept had been found and secured, the Tyranids seemed to be on the retreat, the Eastern Starport was retaken from the Eldar, and Pahradiess Hive was taken back from the Alpha Legion.

But there was an equal amount of bad news: Daemons controlled Eaden Hive and threatened to turn Jenys-S II into a Daemon World, the Jenys-S Firstborn were still putting up fierce resistance across the continent, Chaos Lord Judass`s body was not found after the battle for the Sanctum Imperialis, Biad-dur refused to reveal the secret location of the Life Generator, and - worst of all - a great hero of the Imperium - Lord Commissar Krauser - had fallen in battle.

Captain Sandros expected to be escorted into the planning room to meet the new Harkonian commander, but he was instead directed to the infirmary.
There, lying bandaged-from head to toe was Krauser.
He was missing his left arm, eye and half of his ear.

Upon seeing the Imperial Fist Captain, Krauser yelled,
"Alright, captain! We got those chaos and xenos scum on the run! Let`s finish the job and find that Life Generator!"

Pauro could only smile back in silent shock and awe.
The chief medicae officer entered and spoke directly to the Space Marine Captain,
"The Lord Commissar pronounced him dead after he was brought here. But after 10 minutes of lying dead on a stretcher, he just coughed up a bit of blood and came back to life.I`ve never seen anything like it."

Krauser interrupted, "I refuse to die…until I can have my revenge and kill that traitor bastard Rolando des Gard! Now get that Adeptus Mechanicus team in here. I want to speak to Adept Biad-dur myself!"

The mysterious Tech Adept stepped forward to listen to the stubborn old commissar…
